September
I know it's January as I write this, but I wanted to back up and start at the beginning of the year.  I have been so grateful for Google and other people posting their preschool ideas online.  {Special thanks to Joanna Colvin (my sister-in-law's sister-in-law) :)} for her curriculum creation.  All of this has helped me out so much!  I'd like to pay it forward.

apple craft
Thus, in the event that anyone might be able to glean something from this, I've posted my September preschool calendar and some pics from our Johnny Appleseed Unit and our Nature Walk.  We had fun reading about Johnny Appleseed and our Wednesday group peeled apples and made applesauce cookies in class one day.  We created the apple craft with a pipe-cleaner worm eating its way through the apple.  The kids had fun bending their "worms" in all different directions.

Nature Walk craft time
We did our Nature Walk to a field in my neighborhood and collected leaves.  Then we came back and drew a tree trunk and branches and then glued our leaves on paper.  We left some on a tray to see what happened to the leaves now they were no longer on the tree. We also took crayons and drew some autumn leaves, then went over the crayon with watercolors.  The watercolors won't mix with the waxy crayon, so it creates a neat effect.

I will continue to upload pics of art we did in September, but at least here's a start!

November News~

Hello! **The Tuesday before Thanksgiving will be a fun kitchen day for the kids. They are going to make homemade butter for your Turkey Day rolls and also pumpkin pies. If you still have their pumpkin from the pumpkin patch (and it hasn't been turned into a jack-o-lantern :)), I would be happy to take it off your hands and turn it into pumpkin puree for this activity. :D Just bring it to school after Halloween.

Following the Weber County School District schedule, there will be no school on November 21st or 22nd. Enjoy this time with your family—have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Save the Date!
Our Christmas Program will be held December 13th at the Weber County Library, Southwest Branch.

Thank you!

Miss SueZan
November
The pie day turned out awesome! I did it in groups by splitting them up, five and four. One group played while the other group baked.  Then we traded.  With a giant bowl in the middle we tripled the pumpkin pie recipe using pumpkins from the pumpkin patch.  You just cut the pumpkin down the middle, remove the stem, and scoop out the seeds. Place on a cookie sheet and cover with foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 1/2 hours.  Then scoop it out and blend it.  Voila!  You have your pumpkin puree.  I took time to bake the pumpkins the day before, and then showed the kids where it all came from.

The first group--with my 3 year old, Logan, climbing up on the counter as we took the picture.  He wants the beaters. :)
The second group--shaking cream into homemade butter in babyfood jars.
The kids each had measuring cups and as we went through the ingredients list, I went in a circle around my island and each child helped put something in the mix.  Then, we blended it together and poured it in the pie shell.  Pumpkin Pie has a tendency to splatter when you're mixing it, so I had each of them hold a towel in front of them while I did the hand mixer part of things.  :)  It was funny to have a wall o' towels encircling the mixing bowl!
We also made butter by taking empty baby food jars, pouring it half full with heavy whipping cream and shaking for about 15 minutes.  The kids get bored of this fast, so we played Turkey Bowling.  While they stood in line, they shook their jars, and then rolled a pumpkin (minus the stem) toward water bottles with  paper turkeys on the them to see how many they could knock down.  They loved it when their cream starting to turn into the ball shape of butter.

This is the second year of teaching preschool now and I'm loving it!  There are ten students now and they all have such unique personalities.  It's so fun to see the "light bulb" go on.  And I love it when parents tell me that they hear their preschooler singing songs we've learned and pointing out letters we've covered.  It's awesome!

So I'm going to be updating our blog at least weekly, and trying to post pics of things we are doing and highlights of the week.  :)  Have a beautiful (if yet freezing cold!) January!
